Your Yorkie will love this delicious, natural, healthy recipe that contains hemp seeds, beef liver, chia seeds, and coconut oil.
As you can probably tell by our latest posts, I have been a bit treat-happy lately. I have really enjoyed trying new recipes and have discovered the joy of actually creating my own recipes. More than anything, it has been really fun discovering all the great ingredients that are available that can have great benefits for our furry family members. In our latest recipe, we have created a tasty treat packed with goodness.
First, our recipe uses Garbanzo Bean Flour. Garbanzo bean flour, also known as chickpea flour, is high in protein and low in fat. It is a good source of dietary fiber and iron and is completely grain-free. Garbanzo bean flour contains no cholesterol, sodium or saturated fat, and is gluten-free.
This recipe also features hemp seed. Hemp seed is considered a complete protein and is an amazing source of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. I had heard about the virtues of hemp seed but hadn’t considered using it in treats until I decided I wanted an alternative to flax seed, just for variety.
We also mixed in some Chia Seed – yes, Chia, like the Chia Pets. Chia seeds are a natural source of omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and protein. Chia seeds are one of the best known sources of essential fatty acids, with nearly two-thirds being comprised of omega-3 as ALA.
As with a few of our other treats, we are using Coconut Oil in these treats. Coconut oil is packed with “good” fats and can help the body resist both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Coconut oil can boost thyroid function helping to increase metabolism, energy and endurance. It increases digestion and helps to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
Liver is a nutrient-rich organ that almost all dogs absolutely LOVE to eat. Liver can provide your Yorkie with protein, fat, vitamin A, copper, iron, niacin, phosphorus, zinc, B vitamins, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and essential amino acids. The best liver for dog consumption comes from beef, lamb, pork, chicken, or bison. It shouldn’t be fed all the time as the main diet, but used in moderation it can be great for your Yorkie.
This recipe is packed with a lot of great things for your Yorkie, and it’s a tasty snack your fur baby will love!
Happy Hemp Liver Treats
1/3 pound beef liver
1/4 cup Coconut Oil at liquid state
1/2 cup White Chia Seeds
1/2 cup Shelled Hempseed
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups Garbanzo Bean Flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a cookie sheet with coconut oil. Puree liver in blender. Add eggs and coconut oil and blend until smooth. Pour into bowl and add cheese, mix well. Fold in the Chia seeds and Hemp seeds.
Slowly add the Garbanzo Bean Flour, a 1/2 cup at a time. On the last 1/2 cup, you may need to work the dough with your hands.
Place dough on floured waxed paper and place another piece of waxed paper on top. Roll out with rolling pin to desired thickness. Remove top layer of paper and turn dough over onto floured surface. Cut into shapes with cookie cutter and place on greased cookie sheet. Rework scraps until all dough is used.
Bake cookies in oven for about 15 minutes to until a light golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
Store in an airtight container in the freezer or fridge and take out as needed.
The nifty little container I am using for these treats is called “Pupperware” and they are totally awesome. I have a couple of these and they are bone shaped and stack together. You can get yours online for just $3.99. They come in clear with lid colors of clear, pink, red, and black. Click here to get some for yourself: Bone-shaped Pupperware to store your dog treats
