Conditioning the coat is an essential part of the grooming process. Using a quality conditioner should be a top priority in maintaining a healthy coat. Today, I’m going to tell you about what’s in our conditioner and why it works as well as it does.
First, if you look at our label, you’ll see what ingredients we use. The label shows the following:
Distilled Water, Aloe barbadensis (Aloe) Juice, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ricinus communis (Castor Seed) Oil, Fragrance Oil Blend, Stearalkonium Chloride, Hydrolized Wheat Protein, d-Calcium Pantothenate (Panthenol Vitamin B5), Azadirachta indica (Neem) Oil
As with other ingredient labels, our labels place the ingredients in descending order of quantity, ie, the first ingredient is the most used ingredient in the product and the last ingredient is the least used ingredient. So, let’s do a run-down of what’s included.
Distilled water makes up the bulk of the conditioner. The process of distilling removes the majority of the impurities from water. We use the distilled water to create a solution of all the other ingredients.
Everyone knows about aloe vera – that plant you can use the juice from to soothe burns. Aloe vera is rich in amino acids and protein, and is great for promoting healthy hair. Aloe vera nourishes the hair and protects it from damage.
The name is a bit misleading, as cetaryl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that is non-irritating, non-drying, and beneficial to the skin and hair. The cetearyl alcohol we use is derived from plants and works to keep the oil and water in the conditioner from separating. It also works as a thickener for the conditioner.
Castor oil is something you probably know. Castor oil can be used as a laxative when taken internally. But, did you know that when used topically, castor oil is a great moisturizer? Castor oil is a vegetable oil that can be used to treat fungal infections, increase hair growth, heal skin ailments, and protect the skin and coat.
While the base conditioner itself has a neutral, pleasant scent, we add a little fragrance to our conditioner to make it smell delicious. We don’t give away our secrets on the blend of oils, but the fragrance itself makes up about .39% of the conditioner, making it a vey small addition to the overall product.
Stearalkonium Chloride is a fatty acid found in plants and animals. The Stearalkonium Chloride we use is vegetable based. It’s a salt that binds to proteins and improves the luster and condition of hair. It also serves as a detangling agent.
Hairs are 91% hard protein. Wheat protein can be absorbed by the hair to strengthen it, prevent breakage, and attract moisture. Wheat protein can even help improve and strengthen damaged hair.
Panthenol is a provitamin of B5. It easily penetrates the hairs to moisturize and soften them. It can improve irritated skin, increase shine, and reduce split ends. Panthenol can help increase elasticity and increase the overall shine of the hair.
Neem oil is a vegetable oil made from the pressed fruits and seeds of neem. It has a rather funky smell, but it’s a wonderful oil. Neem is anti-inflammatory, encourages healing of the skin, is a natural insect repellant, treats fungal infections, and promotes healthy hair growth.
