Your Yorkie will love this healthful, all natural, gluten free treat recipe made with pumpkin and coconut oil!
I have been a little baking-crazy lately – maybe it’s the cold weather, but I’ve been on a kick. Yesterday, I decided it was time to come up with a new treat for my furry family members, and I wanted to do something that was not only tasty, but also beneficial. What I came up with ended up being better than I expected – an all natural and tasty treat that has some awesome health benefits. Catherine loves this so much, I had to share the recipe with you.
First lets talk about the ingredients and their benefits.
- Brown rice flour – gluten free and great for dogs with wheat allergies. It’s easily digestible and provides B vitamins and fiber, among other nutrients.
- Flax seed meal – an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acids, is good for the coat and arthritis. It’s also an excellent source of fiber.
- Eggs – eggs are packed with protein!
- Pumpkin – a good source of fiber and excellent for digestive health.
- Coconut oil – great for the skin, digestion, and immune health.
This recipe is packed with goodness for your Yorkie!
Awesome Yorkie Pumpkin Biscuits
- 2 1/2 cups Brown Rice Flour
- 1/4 cup Flax Seed Meal
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup canned pumpkin
- 1/4 – 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two baking sheets with a small amount of coconut oil.
Place coconut oil container in warm water to bring to a liquid state (76 degrees F).
Combine brown rice flour and flax meal in a large bowl. Mix eggs and pumpkin together in a separate bowl until smooth. Add pumpkin mixture to brown rice mixture in two parts, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add coconut oil slowly, using your hands to pull the dough together.
Roll dough out between two pieces of waxed or parchment paper to desired thickness. (about 1/4″ thick.) Remove top piece of waxed/parchment paper, flip dough onto brown rice floured counter, remove top piece, and then cut biscuits using desired cookie cutter. Re-roll and cut scraps until you’ve used every possible bit of dough.
Place biscuits on oiled baking sheets. If using a dog bone shaped cutter, gently press down, wiggle a little, then lift out.
Bake for 20 – 25 minutes, until the top of the biscuit has dried out completely. Let biscuits cool on wire racks. Store in an airtight container.
The nifty little container I am using for these treats is called “Pupperware” and they are totally awesome. I have a couple of these and they are bone shaped and stack together. You can get yours online for just $3.99. They come in clear with lid colors of clear, pink, red, and black. Click here to get some for yourself: Bone-shaped Pupperware to store your dog treats
