Did you know that coconut oil has major advantages for your Yorkie when taken internally?
I’ve been giving coconut oil to our dogs for years. I don’t do it every day, but for a few weeks here and there. Our older black lab, Dakota, really benefits from it when it comes to his achy joints. So, today I’m going to talk about the benefits of feeding coconut oil to your pets.
What is Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the edible oil extracted from the meat of a ripened coconut. Pure virgin coconut oil is 92% saturated fat. Like most saturated fats, it’s solid at room temperature and liquid when heated to over 76 degrees. Like all fats, coconut oil is a blend of fatty acids, but coconut oil contains no cholesterol. Coconut oil contains an unusual blend of short and medium chain fatty acids, primarily lauric (44%) and myristic (16.8%) acids. It is this unusual composition that may offer some health benefits.¹
Coconut oil is sold at most grocery stores, and is usually next to the other cooking oils like olive oil and vegetable oils. A pint costs between $10 and $15.
Dosage for Dogs
The dosage is 1/2 tsp. daily per 5 pounds of body weight, or 1 tsp per 10 pounds daily. Start with 1/4 of the recommended daily dose and work your way up to the full dose over 3 – 4 weeks. Introducing coconut oil too quickly can result in some stomach upset.
I give the coconut oil by melting it and drizzling it over their daily food. You can also use it to replace vegetable oil when cooking. It gives foods a nice fresh, coconut taste. I’ve made some treat recipes with coconut oil that Catherine absolutely loved.
There are a number of reported benefits of coconut oil. Here are a few:
- Prevent infections
- Strengthen the immune system
- Improves digestion
- Balances thyroid function
- Promote a smooth and shiny coat
- Prevent and improve dry skin and other skin issues
- Defense against parasites
- Regulate metabolism

And more benefits of coconut oil are being constantly discovered. If you’re looking for a healthy alternative to any of the ailments listed above, try coconut oil.
